About Us
Strategic Advantage was founded as a TQM training firm in Memphis over
ten years ago, emphasizing the improvement of the global competitiveness of North
American companies. Specializing in material handling solutions, we were
asked by our clients to help them understand the confusing pricing practices of
the corrugated packaging industry. This led to the development of Box$hop
2000-XP; a new class of software- The Packaging Information Manager.
This IT tool
'broke the code' of packaging pricing. Once, this knowledge was only known
by packaging suppliers. This SAI breakthrough put this knowledge in the
hands of the packaging sourcing team.
Another key consideration for our creative team was to eliminate the adversarial
atmosphere that often existed between packaging buyer and seller. Although
sourcing
professionals have known that it is to everyone's advantage to be
supplier-friendly, how to maximum this advantage was not so well known.
We then applied Harvard's 'Principled Negotiation' techniques to help understand the relationship between box buyer and box seller.
Combing the power of Principled Negotiation and our own years of industry
experience produced key breakthroughs in understanding how the buyer-seller
relationship could work best. This understanding was
the basis for the later development of The Box$hop Method.

Method
The Box$hop Method employs two powerful strategies.
1. DEFINE THE SAVINGS
Accurate and efficient analysis of a customer's corrugated spend profile.
Because our practice is nation-wide, we know what price levels suppliers are
willing to sell to their best customers. Using our proprietary software,
Box$hop 2000-XP, we compare our client's spend profile with 'best of category'
pricing. If a gap is found, we can easily calculate at what price level
our client should be buying.
2. CAPTURE THE SAVINGS
When SAI is asked to close this pricing gap, we apply a unique form of
supplier engagement to the process. Our negotiation techniques leverage
the benefits of lean manufacturing principles with the power of Harvard's
Law School "Program On
Negotiation". The book, 'Getting
To Yes', by Roger Fisher and William Ury wrote effectively about this
approach. These strategies have been specifically adapted to the packaging
industry dynamic by our team of negotiation specialists.
